GOLF CARTS ON SUN CITY ROADS: WHAT ARE THE RULES? 

Golf Carts – also at times referred to as Golf Cars – are not just for driving among the 11 Sun City golf courses. In Sun City, a large portion of our community uses golf carts as a primary mode of transportation, and that is seen as a highlight of living here. But with that convenience comes the need for safety, courtesy and responsibility.

WHERE TO PARK GOLF CART AT YOUR HOME

One question we often run into is where to park a Golf Cart, as many residents want to keep it shady or cool in the Arizona weather. It is important to check with our Compliance Team if you would like to provide some new shade for your cart, to ensure any modifications to your home, driveway or yard complies with the deed restrictions, or CC&Rs.

ON THE ROAD

Golf carts must follow the same rules of the road as vehicles – stopping at lights and stop signs, and they must be registered with the state. Drivers must have a valid driver’s license as well. However, there are important safety laws the state has put in place, including:

• Golf carts are recommended by Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office to stay on roads with 35 mph speed limits or less. Roads like Bell Road, Grand Ave., and 99th Ave. are among those with higher speed limits that are considered unsafe for golf carts.
• Golf carts must yield right of way to other traffic, pulling to the farthest right to avoid impeding traffic.

SAFETY TIPS FROM MCSO

The Sheriff’s Office also encourages golf cart drivers to use or install seat belts to avoid injuries that occur during crashes with no restraint. In addition, drivers can change their ignition lock/cylinder if their model has a universal key to avoid theft.
